If you are a high school student
You may not apply directly to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program. High school students should apply to a two-year Associate in Applied Science (AAS) preferably in one of FIT's School Art and Design programs. On completing that degree, the student will apply to the two-year Toy Design BFA program. The Toy Design Department can provide information regarding the best course of study to guide you into the program.
If you have an AAS from FIT
You may apply to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program if your AAS is from one of FIT's School of Art and Design programs. Applicants are expected to provide a competitive portfolio. This includes a take-home exam, provided by the Department upon application, that is an integral part of the evaluation. If your AAS from FIT is not in an art or design related field, please schedule an appointment with the department chairperson to discuss your options.
If you have credits or a degree from another college
You may apply to the two-year Toy Design BFA program as a transfer student if you meet one of the following criteria by the time you enroll at FIT:
- You will have an associates or bachelor's degree from an accredited college in a program that is equivalent to any FIT Art or Design AAS program. Note: A college program is equivalent if it contains the same major area and liberal arts distribution as an FIT AAS Art or Design program. Applicants are expected to provide a competitive portfolio. This includes a Take-Home Exam, provided by the Department upon application, that is an integral part of the evaluation. Applicants from college programs that are not equivalent must apply to an AAS program.
- You will have earned 60 credits toward a bachelor's degree in an equivalent program at an accredited college. For admittance to the program, entering students must have completed 24 credits in design courses which exhibit visual literacy in the areas of drawing, design fundamentals, critical thinking, conceptual thinking, and basic computer skills, and at a minimum, 6 credits of Art History. Applicants are expected to provide a competitive portfolio. This includes a take-home exam, provided by the Department upon application, that is an integral part of the evaluation.
- If you are a graduate in related areas, such as mechanical industrial design, architecture, or engineering, you may also be considered. For admittance to the program ,entering students must have completed 24 credits in design courses which exhibit visual literacy in the areas of drawing, design fundamentals, critical thinking, conceptual thinking, basic computer skills, and at a minimum, 6 credits of art history. Applicants are expected to provide a competitive portfolio. This includes a take-home exam, provided by the Department upon application, that is an integral part of the evaluation.
