The major in Textile/Surface Design offers students the opportunity to prepare for design positions in the textile and related industries in fields such as weaving, print design, home furnishings, apparel, home accessories, and paper products. *Liberal Arts: 18 credits
- History of Art: 6 credits. HA 342 and CHOICE of one (1) HA course that meets General Education Other World Civilizations requirement (G9). See the full list of Art/Design History courses under HA: History of Art and Civilization.
- American History: 3 credits. CHOICE of one course that meets the General Education American History requirement (G10)
- Foreign Language: 6 credits. Two semesters of the same foreign language, one of which must meet the General Education Foreign Language requirement (G8). See the list of courses available in Foreign Languages.
- Liberal Arts electives: 3 credits. Select Liberal Arts courses (for which prerequisites have been met) from the following subject areas: CH (Chinese), EN (English), FI (Film and Media) - any FI course other than FI 261, 361, 362, 461, and 462, FR (French), HA (History of Art), HE (Health Education) 201, 301, IT (Italian), JA (Japanese), MU (Music), HI (History), MA (Mathematics), LA (Liberal Arts), MC (Modern Languages and Cultures), PE (Physical Education and Dance) 215, 216, 217, PL (Philosophy), SC (Science), SP (Spanish), and SS (Social Sciences). CHOICE of any two to three courses totaling 3.5 credits: BE 261, BL 201, CD 123, CG 121, CG 214, CG 212, EP 311, FA 131, FA 132, FA 171, IN 201, PH 118 or any available course in Accessories, Advertising, Advertising and Marketing Communications, Fabric Styling, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Home Products Development, Illustration, Interior Design, Photography, and Textile Development and Marketing or any course in the Creative Technology minor or any business or art course in the Ethics and Sustainability minor.
NOTE: TD 131, TD 115, and TD 224 must be completed prior to the sixth semester.
IF YOU ARE A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT
You should apply to the two-year Associate in Applied Science (AAS) program. High school students may not apply directly to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program. On completing the AAS, many students choose to apply to the two-year BFA program. Applicants to the AAS program are expected to provide a competitive portfolio.
IF YOU HAVE AN AAS FROM FIT
You may apply to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program if your AAS is from one of FIT’s School of Art and Design programs. High school students may not apply directly to the bachelor's degree program. You should apply to the two-year AAS program, and after completing that degree apply to the two-year BFA program. Applicants to the BFA program from AAS majors other than Textile/Surface Design are expected to provide a competitive portfolio.
Students who have an AAS from a FIT program that is not Textile/Surface Design may need to complete additional courses prior to enrolling in the BFA Program.
IF YOU HAVE CREDITS OR A DEGREE FROM ANOTHER COLLEGE
ou may apply to the two-year Textile/Surface Design BFA program as a transfer student if you meet one of the following criteria by the time you enroll at FIT:
- you will have an associates or bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college in a program that is equivalent to the FIT Textile/Surface Design AAS program
- you will have earned at least 60 credits toward a bachelor's degree in an equivalent program at a regionally accredited college.
A college program is equivalent if it contains the same major area and liberal arts distribution as the FIT Textile/Surface Design AAS program. Applicants from college programs that are not equivalent must apply to the AAS program.
Please note that FIT AAS students receive priority admissions consideration.
