Building upon the success of the AAS studies in Fashion Design, courses in the BFA program advance in complexity as students hone their expertise in the knitwear concentration. Through applied experiential learning and the creative application and development of critical problem-solving challenges, students become adept fashion designers. Students attain a greater understanding of the fashion design process, further perfect their conceptual/technical skills, and advance in the development of a personal design aesthetic and their adaptive abilities. This program prepares graduates for success in knitwear careers, related design fields, and other careers not yet imagined. Registering for this concentration is based on availability. Curriculum below is for the entering class of fall 2020.

Liberal Arts: 18 credits
- History of Art: 6 credits. CHOICE of one (1) HA course that meets General Education Other World Civilizations requirement (G9) and one (1) additional HA course. See the full list of Art/Design History courses under HA: History of Art and Civilization.

Foreign Language: 6 credits. Two semesters of the same foreign language, one of which must meet the General Education Foreign Language requirement (G8)
Liberal Arts Elective(s): 6 credits.
Select Liberal Arts courses from the following subject areas: AB (Arabic); CH (Chinese); EN (English); FI (Film and Media) – any FI course other than FI 205, 261, 361, 362, 461,and 462; FR (French); HA (History of Art); HE (Health Education) 201, 301; IT (Italian); JA (Japanese); MU (Music); HI (History); MA (Math); MC (Modern Languages and Cultures); PE (Physical Education and Dance) 215, 216, 217; PL (Philosophy); PO (Portuguese); SC (Science); SP (Spanish); and SS (Social Sciences).
Major Area Elective(s): 6 credits minimum.
CHOICE of major area courses (for which prerequisites have been met) from the following: FD 231, FD 281, FD 321, FD 341, FD 342, FD 343, FD 364, FD 366, FD 374, FD 383, FD 384, FD 385, FD 386, FD 461, FD 467, FD 472, FD 475, FF 312, FF 323, FF 324, FF 343, FF 344, FF 345, FF 353, FF 398. The same course cannot be used to fulfill a required Major Area and a Major Area Elective.
NOTE: The assortment of Major Area Elective and Related Area Elective courses available and offered during a given semester is subject to change. All courses will not be available or offered each semester. The list of course options may evolve over time; contact the Fashion Design Department for details.
**NOTE: FF 322 is required and may be taken in either 5th or 6th semester.
CHOICE of FD 342 or FF 345 is required and may be taken in either 5th or 6th semester.
Students who successfully complete the Fashion Design BFA program will be able to:
- Create global design products utilizing their advanced knowledge of new technology and traditional craft.
- Identify problems, anticipate challenges, and envision solutions in existing fashion systems.
- Understand and incorporate sustainability decisions into their design aesthetics and creativity.
- Collaborate across disciplines as a team leader, effective team member, and innovative design thinker.
- Function independently with a forward-looking ability to promote their inventive personal design vision through the creative work they present.
