EN 271 — Literature and History: The Development of American Culture to 1865

Students read significant texts from America's cultural development against the background of a narrative of U.S. history through the Civil War. The course surveys a wide variety of literature, from firsthand accounts of slavery to philosophical sources of the U.S. Constitution to early documents in the debate over the role of women in society.
